Tue 20th April - Day 4, Coombe to Holywell (19 miles)

Mud, Mud, Glorious Mud!
It gets quite cold through the night, leaving condensation on the tent. My blister seemed to be less painful this morning and I set off at 8:30 along wooded tracks & paths through Tehidy Country Park. It was good walking weather, cloudy with sunny intervals and a cooling breeze.

Looking SW back to Portreath
Well so much for trying to keep my boots dry, a section of the track coming into Portreath was flooded and had been used by cattle leaving a brown, stinking mire to wade through. It was a good job I had my gaitors on as it was deeper than my boots in places.

The sandy bay at Portreath was typical of all the bays along the coast, they all had surfers of one form or another in them. I was back on the path now, passing more mine workings on the way to the next bay at Porthtowan,

I stopped for an early pub lunch and had sweet & sour pork & rice, this was the only meal of the whole trip that I was unable to finish, I blame it on the mars bar I had just half an hour before.

Although the path was easy to walk on the route was becoming much more up & down around the bays and inlets. The rain started just after Chapel Porth, but this made no difference to the surfers at St Agnes.

Cove at St Agnes
With all the easy accessible beaches along this part of the coast there were plenty of campsites to head for. Intending to camp at Perranporth I arrived at 16:30 after walking 15 miles but as it was still raining I decided to carry on.

The path went along Perran Beach but I took an alternate inland route, skirting the sand, I took a footpath through the golf course at Reen Sands then used a minor road then footpath to the campsite just before Holywell, thankfully the rain had finally eased by the time I got here at 18:15.

This site was in a valley and meant there was no signal for the mobile phone, this was to become the norm for the next few campsites as they all seemed to be in valleys.

59 miles completed.
