Mon 17th May - Day 31, Grindley Brook to Weston (19 miles)

I had a choice of two routes to follow this morning, stay by the canals or take the South Cheshire Way.

After a leisurely breakfast I set off at 07:45 in the sun and decided to follow the tow path again. After 7 miles, just past Wrenbury, the canal turned away from where I needed to go so I took a minor road to go through Sound and pick up the South Cheshire Way footath.

St Chad's, Wybunbury
It felt a bit odd leaving the comfort of the canals for the uncertainty of the South Cheshire Way. However it was ok, well signposted, good stiles and the path appears to be frequently used.

I had to leave the path to call into the village of Wybunbury to get some food supplies, the prominent feature of this village is the "Leaning Tower"

Footpath through St Chad's churchyard at Wybunbury
This tower, saved from demolition in the 1980s is all that remains of St Chads Church, a 15th century building.

To get back onto the SCW I took another waymarked path through a church, the stone path through the graveyard appeared to be made up of inscribed gravestones!

There where no campsites showing on the map near the route and the whole area was far too populated and open for me to feel secure pitching my tent anywhere.

After 19 miles, just before I got into the village of Weston, I was going through a narrow belt of immature woodland, I had a look deeper into the trees and decided I could pitch the tent in here without it being seen.

It was such a squeeze that I only had room to pitch the inner tent but it had been sunny all day so hopefully there would be no rain through the night, this was my 2nd wild camp of the trip.

519 miles completed.
