Sun 2nd May - Day 16, Lynton to Porlock (15 miles)

Looking back to Lynton
What an excellent day, I left Lynton at 07:15 with the sun shining & a light breeze.

The first 4 miles were a long incline along the side of the hill to Foreland Point, the most northerly point in Devon, just past here 4 deer crossed the track in front of me.

The next 3 miles more or less followed the contour line through woodland, I had my usual break, 2 hours in, sitting on a bench, eating a mars bar, listening to the birds calling & the gentle ripple of the sea on the shore, it was very tranquil.

I continued through an area of Rhododendrum and then an area of pine trees, later on I heard a cuckoo call.

Walking through the trees in the filtered sunlight was very pleasant.

I met a young Canadian couple who had just started to do the complete coast walk from Minehead to Poole, they were camping too. I have only seen 6 folk backpacking so far.

The main route left the woods & followed a minor road for 3 miles to Culbone, where it came back into the trees, but I opted to stay out of the glare of the sun & to continue on a little-used path, it felt as though I had the woods to myself while I sat and had my lunch.

I collected another £5 donation on my way to Porlock Weir, a small settlement around a tidal harbour, where I spent a while before carrying on to Porlock, my destination for the day.

It was 3:00pm I pitched my tent in the sun, was given a mug of tea (I refused the beer) from a couple in a caravan & relaxed for the rest of the day, having walked 15 pain free miles. These Compeed blister pads are good, thanks Davina.

If only every day was like this.

244 miles completed.
