Sun 18th April - Day 2, Botallack to St Ives (16 miles)
Levant Steam Engine, Pendeen |
It was still raining when I woke up but at least my headache had gone. I wasn’t organised properly yet so I did without any breakfast, put on my waterproofs, left the site at 08:30 and headed for the coast to get back onto the path.
Just outside Botallack I came across the first of many of the old tin mines in the area.
With the showers coming at me from the NW I didn’t have much shelter as I was heading north and it was that cold the rain was coming down as hailstones, thankfully I only had to go 3 miles to get to the headland, Pendeen Watch, where the coast turned east and I could stop in the relative shelter for my breakfast of 2 cereal bars.
As I took my rucsac off for my break I heard a snap as part of the plastic support broke, nothing too serious I thought.
Apart from having to make a slight detour due to a bull standing on the path the remaining 12 miles to St Ives were uneventful, the bad weather deterring other walkers from venturing out.
I arrived at Ayr Holiday Park at 5:30 pm, it was still raining and once the tent was pitched I got in it and never came out until the morning.
23 miles completed.
