Log No 354. Mon 23rd Jun 2014 - Stiffkey to Burnham Deepdale, 14 miles (5403 miles walked)

Coming into Wells
Just like yesterday the day started cloudy but the footpath was good, there was no shingle to walk on today.

I left the campsite at 08.15 and it was an hours walk along the edge of the salt marshes to Wells-next-the-Sea. You can't really see the sea, the village is on a tidal channel at least a mile from the true coastline, and that is when the tide is in.

Looking back to Wells
The Norfolk Coast Path followed the road alongside the channel to the car park at the end then continued west along the edge of some trees to the car park at Holkham Gap.

The footpath from Holkham Gap
This was another popular spot with a line of people walking out to the beach. There was plenty of sand here but the tide was that far out I couldn't see it.

A Caterpillar
The footpath had been on the landward side of the trees but it now switched to the seaward side and went through the grassy dunes.

It was not so easy going on the sandy paths but still far better than the shingle of yesterday. It seems strange how I could hardly see a grain of sand yesterday morning and this morning I can't find a single pebble.

Coming into Burnham Overy Staithe
The dunes gave way to the salt marshes again and it was a good footpath again on top of the embankment of the next channel going to Burnham Overy Staithe.

It was getting on for midday, I had eaten all my sandwiches, the sun had been out for a while now and I was hoping to find a cafe for a pot of tea in this next tiny village.

I was out of luck, there was nothing here. It was going to be an early finish today as there was only 3 miles to go to get to today's campsite.

Coming into Burnham Deepdale
The embankment continued round the edge of the salt marsh to the next big channel of Brancaster Harbour. The tide was still out but I could see the sea in the distance this time.

There were a lot of people on this stretch of footpath but no one showed any inclination to want to stop for a chat.

The embankment stopped at the village of Burnham Deepdale and the campsite was at the Information Centre.

It had been a much easier 14 miles in 5 hours but I still was feeling a bit tired, it must just be the heat and I think it is to be even warmer tomorrow.
