All very interesting it lets one see scenery that they would not see otherwise if it was not for the likes of yourself and others. I doubt Dave if I could ever do that kind of walking.

Coasting Round Britain

30th March 2013 to 12th July 2014
Tain to John o Groats (9)
877 out of 5630 miles completed

Log No 51. Tue 28th May 2013 - Lybster to Wick, 17 miles (877 miles walked)

Path from Lybster
A much better day today with the sun shining but it is still a cold east wind.

We had a choice of buses, 07.30 or 08.50, we took the latter as I still had the log to write. I sat at the picnic table outside the tent and did it while Mick made the porridge, all very civilized.

Coast near Occumster
We started walking at 09.25 going down the Main St and a short footpath to the coast, this was the only path shown on the map.

As it was there was plenty of space between the field boundary fences and the edge of the cliff and enough sheep had been through the fences to create a path.

Mick crossing the stream
Early on we had a couple of streams to cross which didn't present too much of a problem.

There were also the shells of what were once large houses right down at the bottom of the cliffs at two of the narrow inlets.

Mick and the lighthouse at Ousbacky
The going was quite slow with the terrain and because we had lots of fences to climb over when we opted to walk in the fields.

On one occasion Mick was saved a nasty injury when the camera in his pocket prevented a sharp nail from gashing his leg, he just ended up with a gash in his pocket and a gouge in his hard camera case.

At the lighthouse at Ousbacky we took to the roads to make up some time.

Ires Geo
We missed going to see the Whaligoe Steps, the map showed a car park which we never noticed when we were walking, nor did we see any sign to the steps. We weren't studying the map as we walked and were passed it before we realised.

Leaving the road in Ulbster we went down a farm road to pick up a footpath to take us over the hill to the minor road at Mains of Ulbster.

Going past Loch Sarclet we got onto a footpath to take us back to the cliffs.

Dave coming into Wick
We had our final break of the day at Ires Geo.

There was a trace of a path all the way to Wick now and the coast here had a few large geos and stacks.

The path improved the nearer to Wick we got and we went by the ruins of the Castle of Old Wick and Trinkie's Pool (a tidal swimming pool).

We arrived in Wick at 16.30, 7 hours to do 17 miles.
