Coasting Round Britain

30th March 2013 to 12th July 2014
Grimsby to Withernsea - The End (63)
5620 out of 5630 miles completed

Log No 370. Wed 9th Jul 2014 - Spurn Point, 9 miles (5620 miles walked)

The walk today was just the 9 mile trip to Spurn Head and back, I would be spending the night back at my parents and my auntie Brenda was going to pick me up at the campsite in Kilnsea at midday.

I was leaving the tent up on the site while I walked round Spurn so I only needed to carry my waterproofs.

The High Tide warning
I was awake at my normal time and thought I may just as well start early, I set off at 06.20, there had been some rain through the night but it was dry and bright when I left.

Where the road used to be
High tide was at 12.00 so there would be no chance I would be cut off.

It was a section of Spurn just past the bird observatory that had been seriously affected by the floods and it had washed away the road and the dune grass.

I don't know if this area is underwater during all high tides but there is a wooden shelter for anyone who has been caught out.

Spurn Lighthouse
It was mud flats on the west side of the spit but there was a strip of sand I could walk on until I got to the footpath taking me through the dunes by the bird hide and past the lighthouse.

The old lighthouse
The black & white lighthouse was built in 1895 to replace the Low Lighthouse which had been built in 1852.

The Black & White was switched off in 1986 and is now just an empty shell.

The lifeboat pier
I got back down to the beach just before the old lighthouse and walked under the pier for the lifeboat station.

The wind had picked up and it was now blowing quite strongly.

A ship passing Spurn Head
Some of the ships coming into the Humber look to be passing very close to the headland.

Looking back to Kilnsea
I hadn't seen anyone else walking on Spurn though a landrover had driven to the end and back.

I continued walking on the beach on the east side until I had had enough of the wind blowing sand in my face and then I went back onto the west side to return to the bird observatory.

I got back to the tent at 09.40 and had a relaxed couple of hours reading my book before packing up the tent.
