Coastline looks lovely in the sunshine. Weather set to stay dry & sunny for the next few days so no soggy kit to carry. (by Karen)

Log No 281. Fri 11th Apr 2014 - Plymouth to Combe, 16 miles (4283 miles walked)

Wrecks in Plymouth
It had been another cold night but thankfully there was no mist this morning and we set off at 08.00 back down the road to catch the 09.00 Cremyll Ferry across to Plymouth to resume the walk.

We crossed the River Plym by the Laira Bridge then turned south to pass over the end of a creek, which seemed to be full of wrecks, and got back to the coast at Jennycliff Bay.

Dave looking over The Sound to Plymouth
We stayed on the road as it climbed to Staddon Heights giving us good views back to Plymouth.

From here we got back onto the Coast Path which contoured round about half way up the slope.

Plymouth Breakwater
We watched a Naval ship being piloted out of The Sound and past the Plymouth Breakwater, the breakwater was built in 1844 to give ships protection from the weather.

Bovisand Bay
The path went round Staddon Point and into Bovisand Bay where we stopped at a cafe for a pot of tea and our second break, we had been going for four hours.

It was a much easier path today with only a few gentle climbs and the mud was drying out nicely.

"Snake in the grass"
Shortly after going by Heybrook Bay I saw my first live snake of the trip, an Adder was just coming off the path and into the grass and I was lucky enough to get a quick photo before it disappeared in the long grass.

Mick nearing Wembury
Coming into Wembury we met a few groups of walkers and there were a lot of people on the beach.

The next obstacle for us was the River Yealm so we went up the road into the village and on to Hollacombe Hill.

Here we took a footpath, part of the Coast to Coast - Plym to Erme Trail, to Spriddlestone then past the end of Cofflete Creek and on to Combe/Brixton.

Mick at end of Cofflete Creek
It was 15.00 and we had planned on going on for another 3 miles to the campsite at Newton Ferrers but found out last night that they now only had Lodges.

There was a campsite at Combe so Plan B was to pitch the tents when we got there then carry on walking to Newton Ferrers and then get the bus back to Combe.

It had seemed like a good idea but the bus times meant we wouldn't get back until 20.00 so we settled for an early day and stopped at Combe.

A relaxed 16 miles in the sunshine.
