Log No 268. Sun 9th Mar 2014 - Poldhu to Lizard Pt, 9 miles (4086 miles walked)

The footbridge at Polurrian Cove
It was just going to be a short day today, 9 miles to Lizard Point, the most southerly point on my walk.

I drove to Poldhu Cove for 07.40 and once again I didn't need any waterproofs on, though I did wear my gaiters because of the muddy conditions. It was cloudy but I was hopeful it would lift, as it did on the previous two days.

Mullion Cove
Poldhu Point is where the first wireless transmission was made on 12/12/1901 by the Marconi Company to the receiving station in Newfoundland. The transmitting mast was designed by John Ambrose Fleming and the transmission was the morse "S" repeated.

There was another coast path diversion at Polurrian Cove with the footbridge taking a hit during the winter storms. The bridge wasn't really needed to cross the stream.

From Mullion Cove it was up onto the relatively flat clifftop to closely follow the edge of the cliff.

Looking back to Kynance Cove
The bus back was at 12.10 so I was in no great hurry and rather than have a long wait at the end took a longer break or two, not that I could squeeze many breaks into 9 miles.

The sun finally broke through after 2 hours.

Apart from a dog walker at Mullion Cove I hadn't met anyone on the footpath until I dropped down into Kynance Cove.

The coastline to Lizard Point
There was only a farmhouse/cafe here but it was a popular spot with a car park just up the hill and being less than 2 miles from Lizard. The easy footpaths making it a fine Sunday stroll with superb scenery.

I had seen frog spawn way back in February but these were the first frogs I had seen.

Dave at Lizard Point
I got to Lizard Point at 11.10 and thought there might have been a big stone or something to mark the point but there was nothing.

After getting someone to take a photo to mark the spot I wandered round the coast to Housel Bay and then into Lizard village to wait for the bus.

Three sunny days in a row, I hope it's more of the same when I come back down here with the tent after my break.

Now for the drive back to Yorkshire, see my parents, leave the camper then train & ferry back to Orkney. I expect to be back on track Monday 31st March.
