Log No 86. Fri 19th Jul 2013 - Fearnmore to Applecross, 13 miles (1377 miles walked)

Coastline in the mist
It was another very still morning and when I looked outside it was all mist and midges.

I followed the coastline only as far as the first bay then I cut across the heather to the road.

The road was that close to the sea that I just stayed on it.

After 5 miles I took some food out of the rucsac but with no wind I couldn't stop to eat because the midges would very quickly find me, so I ate while walking.

Natural shelter
at Sand
3 miles further on I got to the car park at the imaginatively named Sand, a breeze had started and the mist retreated out to the islands leaving blue sky and sunshine.

I stopped here to eat the rest of my lunch and then take a look at the natural shelter in the rocky outcrop, which, according to archeological findings, was used 7500 years ago.

Looking over Sand to Raasay and Skye
This last 2 days have been bad for horse flies, they're a lot sneakier than midges as I don't feel them land on me. I only know they are there when they bite me.

The bite to kill ratio is only about 90% as the walking poles hamper me from giving the beast a clean slap.

Butterfly
There are plenty of butterflies about but they rarely stay still long enough to photograph.

I don't know what I expected when I got to Applecross but I was disappointed.

I had decided to have a rest & eat day here and stock up as I had absolutely no food in the rucsac.

The nearest shop was a 3 mile round trip away and had a limited selection.

I was needing enough food for 3 days and unfortunately there were no noodles or instant rice, no porridge or cereal bars and only tins of stewing steak. Will I survive until Lochcarron?

There is no phone signal at the campsite either.

13 miles + 3 walked today.
