Log No 336. Thu 5th Jun 2014 - Ipswich to Felixstowe, 16 miles (5202 miles walked)

River Orwell and Felixstowe Docks
I had left a phone battery on charge overnight in the campsite reception and as it didn't open in the morning until 09.00 it was to be a very leisurely start to the day.

The son was out so the tent came down dry and I set off at 09.10.

The first couple of miles was on a minor road to get to the bank of the River Orwell and then the Stour & Orwell Walk footpath was alongside the river bank all the way to Felixstowe Docks.

The footpath at Thorpe Common
The February storm tides earlier this year had breached the embankment and caused flooding in a few places. There was a notice advising of temporary path closure until August 2014, the accompanying map showing the affected sections was no longer there so I carried on.

I saw a notice yesterday as well, it had a map but as it said there was no alternative route I carried on without a problem.

Today I could see no problem with the footpath but found a big chain-link bit of fence blocking the path at the other end and I had to go down on the shore to get round it.

The footpath at Felixstowe Docks
After passing Levington Marina, the lake at Thorpe Common and Trimley Marshes the footpath came round the edge of Felixstowe Docks then crossed over the dockyard railway to come into Felixstowe.

Pretty much all I could see at this point was container after container after container, in the dockyard, in depots and on the numerous lorries driving in and out of dock gates.

Languard Point
The campsite at Peewit Caravan Park was right in Felixstowe so I called in (the owners waived the site fee, thanks very much), pitched the tent, made a drink of tea and finished off my lunch before taking a pack free stroll to the end of the headland at Languard Point.

Felixstowe from Languard Point
It didn't look like it on the map but I ended up walking 16 miles.

The length of the days routes are governed by the availability of campsites, 3 long days at the start of this week and much shorter routes at the end of the week.
