Hastings to Margate (55)
4828 out of 5630 miles completed

Log No 315. Thu 15th May 2014 - New Romney to Folkestone, 15 miles (4828 miles walked)

Looking back to Dungeness
I couldn't get started until 08.30 today because I had to wait for the campsite reception to open to collect my phone battery which had been charged overnight.

It was blue sky and sunshine and it stayed that way all day.

The sea front at Dymchurch
There was a footpath or walkway along the sea front right from Littlestone-on-Sea, through St Mary's Bay and Dymchurch until the MOD firing ranges 2 miles before Hythe at which point I walked along the road pavement.

The Military Canal in Hythe
When Britain was fearful of invasion back in Napoleonlc times defensive measures were taken and as well as the Martello Towers being constructed the Military built a 28 mile long canal and road, over 5 years from 1804, between Hastings and Folkestone to prevent access across the low lying Romney Marshes.

This canal goes right through Hythe and I walked along the adjacent footpath to the sea front at Sandgate, just coming into Folkestone.

Folkestone beach
Folkestone has the same stony beach as the rest of the nearby coastline but it looks a lot more attractive with what seems to be aesthetically designed rock protection instead of lines of wooden groynes.

Folkestone Harbour
I spent an hour in Folkestone library on the intetnet checking out campsites between here and London and trying to work out a sensible route that will get me across the River Thames in time to meet up with Mick again a week tomorrow.

I'm having to walk further up the Thames than I had thought to find a way I can walk across or under.

Copt Point, Folkestone
The campsite was just outside Folkestone, tucked into the coastal slopes of The Warren, round past Copt Point.

It had been an easy 15 miles.
