Coasting Round Britain

30th March 2013 to 12th July 2014
Crail to Stonehaven (5)
465 out of 5630 miles completed

Log No 27. Thu 25th Apr 2013 - Carnoustie to Montrose, 25 miles (465 miles walked)

The coast east of Carnoustie
It was a late start, as far as walking is concerned, as I left Carnoustie at 11.00 to the sound of gunfire coming from Buddon Ness.

There was no path shown on the map so I set off along the sand. I had been going about an hour when I saw a cyclist next to the railway line, I made my way back up and saw there was now a cycleway all the way into Arbroath.

Arbroath
The cloudy start to the day had now given way to sunny intervals and I had some of my lunch on a bench in the harbour.

The Angus Coastal Path continued out of Arbroath as a tarmac footpath up along the top of the cliffs.

After the minor detour at Seaton the path was hardcore & dust all the way to Auchmithie.

The cliffs at Red Head
Signs now directed me inland a little bit on farm tracks until I got back to the cliffs at Red Head. I had the second half of my lunch here.

It wasn't much of a path now but it was identifiable as it went round Ethie Haven and to Redcastle in Lunan Bay.

I got down onto the sand again here but found I couldn't get across the wide stream coming from Lunan.

Ethie Haven
I followed the sandy edge of the stream for a bit but it soon became impassable and I climbed up the steep grassy bank of the ruin Red Castle where a path brought me out onto the minor road.

This was also the cycleway so I stayed with the road for about 3 miles until I found a way back to the cliffs by an old cemetery.

No path here
There was no footpath so I walked along the edge of the ploughed fields until I got to the farm & few houses at Usan.

If I could have found a way up the other side of this small bay I would have continued round the coast but as private houses where built right to the edge I took to the road again for the final stretch into Montrose.

I made my way straight to the High St to wait for the bus, it was good timing as I arrived at 18.30 and the bus was due at 18.45.

It was a long day taking the travelling into account, leaving Fiona's at 6.50 and not getting back until 21.30, but I walked 25 miles. Tomorrow should be easier.
