Coasting Round Britain

30th March 2013 to 12th July 2014
Chichester to Hastings (54)
4754 out of 5630 miles completed

Log No 310. Sat 10th May 2014 - Lancing to Seaford, 20 miles (4754 miles walked)

It wasn't a good forecast for today and tomorrow with strong winds snd rain and that's just what it was when I left at 07.15.

The wind was still southwesterly which kept the weather behind me.

The Pilot boat in Shoreham Harbour
I followed the cyclepath onto Shoreham Beach, this Is almost like a small island being cut off from Shoreham-by-Sea by the River Adur, then over the river by the footbridge into Shoreham.

I walked along the main road then across Shoreham Harbour, this harbour is unusual in that it is cut off from the sea by two locks with the docks being inland. I had to wait to get across because the locks were open while a Pilot boat manoeuvred a cargo ship.

Brighton beach
Back on the sea front I went through Portslade-by-Sea and into Hove and Brighton.

Yesterday it was mostly dog walkers I saw, today it was runners/joggers, I don't think I've seen so many in one stretch of esplanade.

Palace Pier at Brighton
I got to Brighton Pier for 10.00 and stopped in a shelter for my first break.

I took my second break very shortly after when I saw an Asda in Brighton Marina. It was a surprise when I came out of Asda, and I hadn't been in very long, to find blue sky and the sun shining.

Looking back to Brighton Marina
The white cliffs suddenly started at the marina, there was a walkway along the base of the cliffs but as I didn't know where or how far it went I zig-zagged up the side of the cliff onto the clifftop path.

The Under Cliff path at Saltdean
It turned out the Under Cliff path went all the way from the marina to Saltdean so I could have saved myself a climb.

I went on the Under Cliff path for a bit then took the clifftop path again from Telscombe Cliffs to Peacehaven then round to the marina in Newhaven.

The footpath along the River Ouse
I went up the side of the River Ouse a short distance to get to the road bridge then followed the road on the other side to pick up the footpath between the railway line and a channel of the Ouse.

The footpath went right to the campsite in Seaford.

There was a little bit of shelter from the wind with a low bank but inside the tent you wouldn't think it, it is blowing about good style.

It was another longish day covering 20 miles in just under 8 hours.
