30th March 2013 to 12th July 2014
Cardiff to Burnham-on-Sea (42)
3707 out of 5630 miles completed

Log No 242. Tue 11th Feb 2014 - Aust to Clevedon, 20 miles (3707 miles walked)

The Severn Bridge (M4)
It was raining heavily when I left Susan's house to get the bus to Aust and when the driver dropped me off at 08.40 he said "I don't envy you".

The wind was quite strong and because I was now walking on the south side of the Severn I was walking into it along the Severn Way.

The path on the embankment wasn't as muddy as I'd expected and I was soon under the M4 bridge and onto the promenade at Severn Beach.

The wind and rain had all but stopped now and it looked to be brightening up.

The cycleway to Portishead
I was here 10 years walking Lands End to John o'Groats and an old lady I chatted to gave a hug and wished me well. Today I met Chris walking his dog and I walked with him a bit, when we parted he also wished me well and shook my hand, but no hug!

Leaving Severn Beach the path crossed the railway line and I got onto a cycleway deciding to take a mud free route instead of continuing on the path.

I was 2 hours on this weaving through bits of waste ground and industrial areas into Avonmouth before getting on to the motorway bridge (M5) over the River Avon.

The lighthouse at Portishead
Over the bridge the cycleway more or less followed the disused railway line into Portishead.

The route of the cycleway had changed from that shown on the map going through a small nature park and the new housing.

I did a bit confused almost started walking in the wrong direction but the sun was out and I realised I should be walking with it on my left and not right in my eyes.

Fishing in the Severn
I got back onto the bank of the Severn at the golf course and now had a good path to follow to Clevedon.

The path was popular with dog walkers as there were quite a lot of houses along the bank on the way out of Portishead.

The coastline to Clevedon
It was starting to cloud over as I got nearer to Clevedon and it was quite a cool wind now but the path was quite sheltered with a hedge and then going through trees.

Clevedon Pier
Coming into Clevedon the path climbed up a bit on the slope of the bank and there was now a high wall on my left protecting the properties.

The path dropped down to pass Clevedon Pier and I found a bus stop just past there and I only had 15 minutes to wait for the bus to Bristol. The rain started while I was at the bus shelter, so that was good timing.

It was 20 miles today in 7 hours.
